In September 2011, we contacted APOPO because it trains rats to assist in clearing minefields and in diagnosing tuberculosis,1 a program we knew little about but which seemed to have the potential to be highly cost-effective. We did not complete a full review because APOPO declined to participate in our review process. In February 2014, APOPO contacted GiveWell with renewed interest in being evaluated for a recommendation. We did not proceed with research on APOPO at that time because APOPO does not carry out one of the priority programs that are the focus of our top charity recommendations.
