About GiveWell

GiveWell is motivated by the simple question: how can we do as much good as possible?

In our efforts to answer this question, our staff search for and make grants to support the most cost-effective programs we can find to save and improve lives. We focus on global health and poverty alleviation programs in the lowest-income parts of the world because that is where we've found we can have the greatest impact, according to our criteria.

In 2020, we directed more than $240 million. In 2021, we estimate we directed more than $500 million (our numbers are not yet final as of this writing). By 2025, we aim to be directing $1 billion per year, making GiveWell one of the world's largest private funders of global development efforts.

The role

The Grants Coordinator role is a new role that will centralize and systematize the grantmaking process at GiveWell, stewarding grants from the time our research team makes a funding recommendation through the post-grant follow up. GiveWell is unusual among grantmakers because it both makes grants itself and recommends grants funded by other donors. The size, complexity, and number of GiveWell's grants is increasing in tandem with our overall growth, yet we want to maintain our commitment to minimizing undue burdens on our grantees. The Grants Coordinator will be essential to helping GiveWell establish a best-in-class grantmaking procedure—efficient, compliant, and user friendly. As a Grants Coordinator you will have ownership over:

  • Managing the process of getting funding to grantees once it has been internally approved. This includes determining which funder to recommend the grant to, coordinating with grantees and program staff to gather necessary information, and communicating with external funding entities to ensure grants are paid on time and to smooth out roadblocks.
  • Stewarding the publication of grant pages explaining each grant GiveWell recommends. Key steps include coordinating quality control, soliciting feedback and permission to publish non-public information from grantees, and disseminating the published page to stakeholders.
  • Knowledge and information management, including maintenance of grantmaking processes, workflows, and guides; tracking scheduled check-ins and renewals; and grant record-keeping.
  • Identifying areas for improvement and suggesting concrete improvements to the team.
  • Taking on other special projects related to grants management.

So whatever background you bring with you, please apply if this role would make you excited to come to work every day.

We expect you will possess the below qualities. We encourage you to apply if you would use the majority of these characteristics to describe yourself:

  • You are passionate about helping to improve global health and alleviate global poverty as much as possible.
  • You have very high attention to detail.
  • You excel at managing complex processes and diligently keep track of all relevant items.
  • You go beyond executing on established processes and ask: how could this work better for all involved?

  • You are receptive to feedback and willing to provide feedback to others.
