Note: GiveWell has no affiliation with any specific cryptocurrency coin and does not partner with or support any cryptocurrency project. The information below is for individuals who want to support GiveWell or its recommended programs by donating their crypto assets.
Thanks for your interest in donating cryptocurrency to GiveWell!
You can direct your donation to our All Grants Fund, Top Charities Fund, Unrestricted Fund, or one or more of our Top Charity programs.
Cryptocurrency donations are non-refundable, and we sell them for USD shortly after we receive them. If you have any questions about how to donate cryptocurrency, please email us at donations@givewell.org before making your donation.
Please complete our cryptocurrency donation form below prior to sending your coins to the appropriate wallet listed on the right. Doing so will:
- enable us to match your contact information with crypto we receive and send you a receipt;
- allow you to specify your preference for how we allocate your donation; and
- reduce the administrative cost associated with processing your donation.
Donations received without an accompanying donation form submission will be treated as anonymous donations to our Unrestricted Fund. Donations to our Unrestricted Fund may be used for operating expenses or, per our excess assets policy, be designated for grantmaking to highly impactful and cost-effective programs. GiveWell’s board retains final discretion over grant decisions.
Please note that GiveWell’s wallets are managed by Coinbase, and they may not be compatible with smart contracts, mirror essays, or other special arrangements.
We can currently accept donations of the cryptocurrencies listed to the right. After completing this form, please use our wallet addresses listed on the right side of this page to complete your transfer (you’ll still be able to see them after you complete the form). Please make sure to copy the wallet addresses exactly, as donations sent to the wrong wallet will be lost permanently. Note that our wallet addresses changed in September 2023.
If you would like to donate in a cryptocurrency not listed, please email us at donations@givewell.org. We can generally create wallets for other types of coins supported on Coinbase, but unsupported assets that are sent to our account cannot be recovered.
For charitable contributions of cryptocurrency over $500, you may need to file IRS Form 8283 to claim a tax deduction. (If the value is over $5,000, you may also be required to get an appraisal of the assets donated.) If you need us to sign a form 8283, please email us at donations@givewell.org to request a secure form to complete electronically. In order to protect sensitive information such as your social security number, we ask that you do not send us a pre-filled form via email.
