In March 2023, GiveWell staff traveled to India to visit r.i.c.e.'s Project on Breastfeeding and Newborn Care for low-birthweight babies that focuses on kangaroo mother care (KMC), to which we recommended funding in 2022 (see our grant page here). During the four-day site visit, we learned more about how the Project works, improved our understanding of the Indian healthcare system and barriers to program implementation, and gathered insights for potential future KMC-related grants in other settings.
GiveWell staff held meetings with members of r.i.c.e.'s team and other stakeholders, toured the hospital where the Project operates, and accompanied nurses on home visits to families of newborn babies who had exited from the hospital.
