This page allows you to donate to GiveWell for the support of GiveDirectly.

The reason we collect donations on behalf of recommended charities is to (1) allow us to track our own impact on donations and (2) give us a chance to ask you if you'd like to receive updates on GiveWell's research.

GiveWell (a.k.a. The Clear Fund) is a federally-recognized tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization. We are able to make grants for the support of our recommended charities, and U.S. donors are able to take tax deductions for donations to GiveWell to the extent permitted by US tax laws.

It's important to us to track donations made due to our research. If you choose to give directly (rather than through our site), please let us know through our donation report form.

For more detail on the two funds listed below, see our discussion of "flexible" and "typical" funds in our review of GiveDirectly.

"Typical" funds: Unless donors specify otherwise, GiveDirectly intends to use all donations for cash transfers along the same basic lines (in terms of size, structure and targeting) as its past programs, aiming to place 90%+ of such donations directly into the hands of recipients.
"Flexible" funds: GiveDirectly is also interested in making cash transfers in ways that differ from earlier protocols in order to continue experimenting and learning. GiveDirectly may use flexible funds on either typical or experimental cash transfers, at its discretion, while still aiming to place 90%+ of such donations directly into the hands of recipients.

Please note:

  • GiveWell itself does not charge any fees when taking donations for the support of our recommended charities, but Google Checkout charges standard credit card processing fees. To avoid fees, donors may send checks to GiveWell. If you choose to write a check to GiveWell, for the support of GiveDirectly, please complete this form and send it in with your check donation to:

  • You may make a one-time donation above. Visit our recurring donation page to set up a recurring donation.
  • Both GiveWell and GiveDirectly will receive confirmation of your gift as well as your contact information and email address (if you choose to share it). GiveWell shares information with GiveDirectly periodically and GiveDirectly may not be able to acknowledge your gift for some time. Your information will not be shared with any third parties.
  • If you have any trouble using Google Checkout, we can also accept credit and debit card donations through Paypal.
  • GiveWell will not automatically add you to any mailing lists.
