This is the grant application for GiveWell's 2009 grant(s) for economic empowerment in Sub-Saharan Africa. Before beginning this application, please review the background information for this grant.

Part I. Organization information

  1. Organization name:

  2. Organization employer identification number (EIN):

  3. Organization website:

  4. Contact person:

  5. Contact email:

Email will be our primary method of contact, so please provide an address where emails will be received and responded to.

  6. Organization mission:

  7. Do your activities include any of the following?
Please check all that apply. Grants to other nonprofit organizations (if so, please check boxes below for areas that your grants focus on) Microfinance (loans, savings, insurance) Enterprise support (grants, investment, mentoring, and other assistance to for-profit enterprises, of any size, in the developing world) Agricultural development (education, assistance, provision/distribution/marketing of agricultural technology, and other support for developing-world farmers) Economic empowerment programs not included above (see our definition of "economic empowerment" for clarification) Health programs, education programs, and other programs not included in "economic empowerment" (see our definition of "economic empowerment" for clarification)

  8. Please attach a document that lists your organization's program areas and specifies how much funding was allocated to each program area in the most recent year. If you are having trouble with file uploads or prefer to email files, you may send a separate email to povertygrant@givewell.net. Please be sure to include your organization's name and EIN in the subject line.

Part II. Information on clients and outcomes

  1. Please attach 1-5 technical reports on client income levels. See our full definition of a technical report on client income levels for clarification.

The intent of this request is to identify charities with a strong chance of (a) transferring wealth to people with low incomes; (b) causing improvements in people's incomes and standards of living. We are particularly interested in impact studies (studies that show a change in income/standard of living for clients, particularly relative to a control group), but are also interested in studies that simply examine clients at a point in time to gather systematic information about their incomes and standards of living.

If you feel that other types of evidence would make a better case for your organization's involvement with and impact on people in the developing world, please see "Additional information" below.

If your organization is large and runs many different kinds of programs in many different places, please attach the full five studies if possible, and focus on studies of programs that are likely to be replicated and expanded by your organization in the near future (rather than "one-off" programs).

Please do not create new documents for this purpose, and please do not attach summary documents or anecdotes; please attach only full technical reports from completed investigations into client income levels, as specified in our full definition of a technical report on client income levels. Please feel free to email povertygrant@givewell.net for clarification.

  2. Do you aim to run programs that eventually become self-sufficient (i.e., earning enough in revenue to sustain themselves without donor assistance)?
    Yes
    No

If "Yes," please complete the rest of Part II. If "No," please skip to Part III.

We are interested in organizations with a track record of contributing to the growth of self-sustaining programs in the developing world. We are not interested exclusively in such organizations, and answering "no" above will not hurt your chances of receiving a grant.

The intent of the questions below is to gain a preliminary picture of your organization's past contributions to the growth of self-sustaining programs in the developing world. If you feel that other types of evidence would make a better case for your organization's past contributions, please see "Additional information" below.

  3. How many of your programs have become independent (i.e., no longer requiring donor funding) as of 1/1/2009?
  4. For each of the programs that have become independent, up to 10, please attach a recent financial statement. The financial statements should be audited if possible, but this is not required. They should include data on revenue (both earned revenue and donation revenue), expenses, and net income.

Part III. Additional information and confidentiality

Additional information

If you would like to submit additional information, please email povertygrant@givewell.net and include your EIN in the subject line.

We have focused this application on information that we feel is fairly basic and necessary for most organizations in this area. However, if you feel that other evidence is more relevant to your organization, please send it. We are particularly interested in non-anecdotal evidence of your organization's impact on (a) the development of self-sustaining enterprises in the developing world; or (b) improvement in incomes and standards of living for people in the developing world.

Confidentiality

We have a preference for highly transparent organizations, but recognize that there are legitimate confidentiality requests and will honor any confidentiality request made here. If you would like any of your submitted information to remain confidential, please specify what information should remain confidential. All information not marked as confidential will be publicly posted.

Please enter the names of any documents for which you require confidentiality:

I agree that with the exceptions specified in the text box above, all submitted materials are considered public information and will be posted on the GiveWell website.
