Vitamin Angels

Published: August 2019 ( 2009 report, 2013 report)

We are interested in Vitamin Angels because of its work to distribute vitamin A supplements, which is one of our priority programs. We have published notes from five conversations with Vitamin Angels since 2017 with a focus on understanding whether it may be a good fit for a GiveWell recommendation:

  • A conversation with Robert Parker, Chief Operating Officer; Dr. Kristen Hurley, Director of Programs; and Amy Steets, Senior Program Manager on November 16, 2017.
  • A conversation with Amy Steets, Senior Program Manager; Dr. Kristen Hurley, Director of Programs; and Robert Parker, Chief Operating Officer on May 17, 2018.
  • A conversation with Dr. Kristen Hurley, Director of Programs, Amy Steets, Associate Director of Program Operations, and Jamie Frederick, Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, on January 8, 2019.
  • A conversation with Dr. Kristen Hurley, Director of Programs, and Amy Steets, Associate Director of Program Operations, on June 21, 2019.
  • A conversation with Dr. Kristen Hurley, Senior Vice President for Nutrition, Amy Steets, Associate Director of Program Operations, and Jamie Frederick, Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, on February 27, 2020.

In particular, we have discussed Vitamin Angels' monitoring and evaluation processes. We have also reviewed documents Vitamin Angels shared with us (listed in the table below). We have not conducted a full review of its work.

Vitamin Angels also applied for the 2019 GiveWell Grants for Global Health and Development in Southeast Asia and Bangladesh. Notes from our conversation with Vitamin Angels about its grant application are here. In July 2019, GiveWell selected Vitamin Angels as a recipient of a $25,000 grant.

Previously, we contacted Vitamin Angels in May 2013. We published the notes from one conversation with Vitamin Angels with their permission; we did not complete a full review because Vitamin Angels declined to fully participate in our review process at that time. We had also considered Vitamin Angels in 2009.
