In September 2011, APOPO declined to participate in our review process. In February 2014, APOPO contacted GiveWell with renewed interest in being evaluated but we declined to do so because APOPO does not focus on one of our priority programs.

In September 2011, we contacted APOPO because it trains rats to assist in clearing minefields and in diagnosing tuberculosis,1 a program we knew little about but which seemed to have the potential to be highly cost-effective. We did not complete a full review because APOPO declined to participate in our review process.

In February 2014, APOPO contacted GiveWell with renewed interest in being evaluated for a recommendation. We did not proceed with research on APOPO at that time because APOPO does not carry out one of the priority programs that are the focus of our top charity recommendations.
